It's Time to use Functional Businesses to kill Poverty in Africa
- Prof. Olalekan Usiobaifo Asikhia
Poverty remains a profound challenge in Africa, with over 546 million people living in poverty in 2022. By 2025, the poverty rate was projected to be 43.9%, meaning nearly 438.6 million Africans lived on less than $2.15 per day. Countries like South Sudan, Somalia, and Nigeria exhibited extreme poverty rates exceeding 70%. Root causes included economic inequality, poor governance, corruption, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to education and healthcare, and environmental degradation. These factors collectively stifled economic growth and perpetuated cycles of deprivation across the continent.
