Babcock University is strengthening security collaboration with the Zone 2 Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), making its security technology and professional training resources available to support efforts to protect lives and property in its host communities.

President/Vice-Chancellor, Professor Afolarin Ojewole, reaffirmed the University's commitment during a courtesy visit by a 15-member PCRC delegation led by its Chair, Dr. Kunle Popoola.

Professor Ojewole stressed that the University's security is inseparable from the safety of its host communities. He described the shared aspiration as a society where “a mother can sleep soundly at night and a father can go to work with confidence that his family is safe.”

Extending security through technology

Highlighting the University's investment in security infrastructure, Professor Ojewole disclosed that Babcock has deployed four high-altitude drones capable of reaching 30,000 metres and monitoring a 40-kilometre radius beyond the campus. He said the equipment would remain available to support collaborative efforts with security agencies and host communities.

The initiative advances the University's contribution to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through efforts to strengthen security cooperation and community safety.

Building capacity through collaboration

Professor Ojewole commended the Police Community Relations Committee for its role in intelligence gathering and bridging the gap between the police and the public. He expressed the University's readiness to explore professional development opportunities through its School of Law and Security Studies and Executive Education programmes.

He added that discussions would continue on practical areas of cooperation, including possible support for health facilities and other security-related initiatives.

These proposed activities reflect SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, emphasising collaboration among institutions to address shared challenges.

Connecting healthcare to community safety

Dr. Popoola commended Babcock University's consistent support for the Nigeria Police Force, citing the University's medical facility's intervention in saving the life of a wounded Divisional Police Officer in Ijebu Waterside. He requested further assistance for the newly established Ikenne Area Command and continued training for committee members. The delegation also invited Professor Ojewole to serve as Patron of the Police Community Relations Committee, a request he promised to review promptly.

The medical intervention and proposed support for health facilities also align with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, highlighting healthcare's role in emergency response and protecting lives.

Advancing sustainable community impact

The renewed engagement provides a foundation for closer cooperation among Babcock University, security agencies and host communities. By exploring practical ways to share resources, strengthen professional capacity and support community needs, the University is translating institutional partnerships into opportunities for sustainable development.

For Babcock University, this commitment extends beyond the classroom to applying knowledge, technology and institutional resources to challenges that affect people's safety and well-being.
